Lesson 2: Building Technique & Confidence

In Lesson 2, students begin developing real technical skills while still learning through fun, support, and encouragement. After we’ve identified their level in Lesson 1, Lesson 2 is tailored specifically to their needs—whether they are beginners or already have experience.

What We Focus On in Lesson 2

1. Warm-Up & Review

We begin with a light review of Lesson 1 to reinforce:

  • Proper posture

  • Correct hand positions

  • Basic rhythms

  • First sounds or notes

Students also do a short warm-up specific to their instrument (or voice) to activate good habits.

2. Strengthening Technique

Here is where students start to build consistency and confidence.

Violin

  • Bowing practice with smoother, controlled strokes

  • Strengthening the bow hold

  • Playing open strings with steady rhythm

  • Introduction to finger placement (beginner level)

Voice

  • Breath control exercises

  • Resonance and tone-building warm-ups

  • Matching pitch

  • Singing a simple melody or short song

Cello

  • Bow control and straight bowing

  • Strengthening left-hand shape

  • Open string patterns and simple rhythms

  • Introduction to first finger positions

Flute

  • Improving embouchure

  • Controlled long tones

  • First few notes (B-A-G for beginners)

  • Simple one-measure rhythms

Guitar

  • Strengthening chord shapes

  • Single-note exercises

  • Smooth transitions between chords

  • Introduction to strumming patterns with tempo

Piano

  • Right-hand and left-hand coordination

  • Simple 5-finger patterns

  • Basic reading on the staff

  • First beginner songs with both hands (depending on level)

Music Theory

  • Reading notes with more confidence

  • Understanding rhythm values through clapping

  • Writing simple rhythms or melodies

  • Matching written notes to their instrument

3. Learning the First Song / Piece

Students learn a short, level-appropriate piece that reinforces the technique from today's lesson.

Examples:

  • A simple melody

  • A basic reading exercise

  • A one-phrase song

  • A short rhythm or scale pattern

This helps build confidence and gives students something recognizable to practice.

4. Building Good Habits

We look at:

  • What the student is doing well

  • What needs gentle correction

  • How to reinforce proper technique at home

We make sure students understand these adjustments in a fun and supportive way.

5. Creativity & Musical Expression

Students are encouraged to:

  • Try dynamic changes (soft/loud)

  • Explore tempo

  • Experiment with sounds

  • Show a bit of musical personality

Learning technique shouldn’t feel rigid—Lesson 2 helps them discover their own musical voice.

6. Parent Check-In

We go over:

  • Today’s progress

  • What technique we’re focusing on

  • What to practice for the week

  • How the student is developing so far

  • Any early strengths we’re noticing

By the End of Lesson 2

Students will:

✔️ Show improved technique
✔️ Understand basic playing or singing skills
✔️ Learn their first small song or musical pattern
✔️ Develop early confidence and musical awareness
✔️ Have a clear and achievable practice plan.
