🎵 Lesson 4: Building Confidence, Coordination, and Musical Understanding

Lesson 4 continues to strengthen foundational skills while helping students become more independent musicians. At this stage, they begin connecting technique with musical expression.

What We Do in Lesson 4

1. Warm-Up & Skill Reinforcement

We start with:

  • Breathing or bow warm-ups

  • Finger-strength drills

  • Easy scale or long-tone practice

  • Quick review of last week’s song

This prepares the student physically and mentally.

2. Advancing Technique

Violin

  • Better finger accuracy

  • Combining bow strokes + finger movement

  • Practicing simple songs with full bows

  • Introducing slurs (if student is ready)

 

Voice

  • Stronger breath support

  • Warm-ups for range expansion

  • Articulation exercises (clean words, clear vowels)

  • Singing longer phrases without tension

 

Cello

  • Finger strength and accuracy in first position

  • Longer bow strokes with good sound

  • Introducing slurs or short patterns

  • Beginning easy note-reading pieces

Flute

  • Air control for longer notes

  • Reading and playing short 2–4 measure melodies

  • Developing light finger transitions

  • Beginning staccato or tonguing exercises (light introduction)

 

Guitar

  • Playing a full simple song

  • Clear chord transitions

  • Intro to strumming patterns with dynamics

  • Simple melody lines on one or two strings

 

Piano

  • Two-hand coordination improving

  • More confident reading

  • Simple broken-chord patterns

  • Beginning to learn musical phrasing

 

Music Theory

  • Reading notes with improved speed

  • Counting rhythms independently

  • Understanding simple intervals

  • Applying written notes to their instrument

3. Introducing Musical Terms

Students begin learning vocabulary such as:

  • Forte/piano

  • Legato/staccato

  • Crescendo/decrescendo

  • Tempo markings

This helps them understand and follow music more easily.

4. Third Song or Piece

Students learn:

  • A new piece that is slightly more challenging
    OR

  • The next part of their previous song

This helps their confidence grow and shows real progress.

5. Parent Check-In

We go over:

  • Today’s new technique

  • What song or exercise to practice

  • Areas that improved

  • Habits that still need gentle correction

  • How the student’s confidence is building

By the End of Lesson 4

Students will:

✔️ Understand basic musical terms
✔️ Learn 2–3 short songs or pieces
✔️ Show stronger coordination and rhythm
✔️ Begin building independence in their practice
